As an analyst, we’ve all had problems convincing our boss to do something.

Ever analysed a report and see trends convincing you it’s the right time to implement a CRM (Customer Relationship Management) system? Or to optimise the site for tablet/mobile users due to the ever increasing load of users on those devices? Or a situation where you need to convince your boss but need some market data to back up your solution?

Fear not!

First things first, before you approach your boss, you need to do your homework. How do you find market data for internet usage across various devices I hear you scream?

Google’s Consumer Barometer is a free tool that provides insights on how digital consumers, in over 50 countries, research and purchase different products and services.

You’re able to find information such as:

  • How much of the UK use Tablets
  • Age ranges of those who frequently use the internet
  • What types of activities are done on a smartphone

Two research studies were conducted in 2014, involving over 150,000 respondents, making this a trustworthy source with Google’s badge of approval on top. Keep in mind there’s still juicy information to take from this, such as 49% of clothing and footwear purchases are made online in the UK. All this information is available to take and for you to manipulate or dissect it in any way that will convince yourself (before you try and convince your boss).

Now you’ve done your homework, it’s time to put together a presentation on why you think it’s a good time to optimise your site for tablets and mobile devices. It may work in your favour if you plan the presentation to lead up to your existing data and to create a sense of risk if no action is taken. An example of flow in your presentation should look something like this:

  1. Introduce the problem
  2. Why is the problem, a problem?
  3. Research on market and competitors
  4. What we are doing
  5. What our data suggests
  6. Risk assessment

Once you have everything in place, you should run through the presentation and feel a sense of flow. The whole point of converting your boss is learning how to convince somebody of this problem you’re seeing. If you can’t convince yourself, how are you going to convince your boss?
