One of the most exciting emerging technologies is augmented reality. Even though AR is nothing new, but its widespread use is yet to come. This medium offers endless possibilities which can be both practical and entertaining.

AR is the common ground in Ikea Place, the home furnishing app, in Pokémon Go, the popular gaming app or in Google’s experimental project, Just a Line. Its popularity lies within its easy usage, interactivity and spectacular nature. No wonder Adobe has joined this wave of immersive technology and introduced their new authoring tool and system, Project Aero.

Adobe & Apple: where software and hardware meet

Adobe’s new AR system was created in collaboration with Apple and it was announced at the World Wide Developers’ Conference in San Jose on June 4. This multiplatform tool will make it easy to bring images, animations, videos and 3D content into an augmented reality environment. It merges together different formats from well-known editing and design softwares such as Photoshop or Dimension CC into a brand new file format, called usdz. Usdz is a compact single file and based on Pixar’s existing Universal Scene Description specification. It is optimised for sharing and was developed specifically for AR to ensure compatibility, seamless experience and ease of use. The California-based software company is also adding usdz support to Adobe Creative Cloud apps and services.
The Adobe-Apple collaboration doesn’t end here. Apple’s AR framework, ARKit is also essential to create AR experiences for iOS mobile devices on iOS 12. ARKit makes it possible to incorporate real-world objects into AR creating the ultimate immersive experience for users. Developers will then be able to bring their content into Xcode to add the final touches to their work.

Future of AR

AR content creation does not only require the combination of these solutions but also the collaboration of designers and developers to produce enriched experiences. Project Aero offers a simplified process and therefore easier content creation, so we might expect a greater AR exposure in the following years. This technology can be implemented in various parts of our life such as education, work, gaming, the list goes on. The ability to rethink and alter reality to make our life easier and more exciting has never been closer.

Project Aero is in test phase and will be released in 2019.
